Statement of Faith

ABOUT GOD
God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three personalities: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God. (Genesis 1:1,26-27; Genesis 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; 1 Peter 1:2; 2 Corinthians 13:14)
ABOUT MAN
Man is made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character. He is the supreme object of God’s creation. Although man has tremendous potential for good, he is marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called sin. This attitude separates man from God. (Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1-2)
ABOUT ETERNITY
Man was created to exist forever. He will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or in union with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. (John 3:16; John 2:25; 1 John 5:11-13; Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:15)
ABOUT JESUS CHRIST
Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all men by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven’s glory and will return again to earth to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. (Matthew 1:22-23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5; John 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14-15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Timothy 6:14-15; Titus 2:13)
ABOUT SALVATION
Salvation is a gift from God to man. Man can never make up for his sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can man be saved from sin’s penalty. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith. (Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6; John 1:12; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26; Romans 5:1)
ABOUT ETERNAL SECURITY
Because God gives man eternal life through Jesus Christ, the believer is secure in their salvation for eternity. Salvation is maintained by the grace and power of God, not by the self-effort of the Christian. It is the grace and keeping power of God that gives this security. (John 10:29; 2 Timothy 1:12; Hebrews 7:25; Hebrews 10:10; Hebrews 10:14; 1 Peter 1:3-5; Ephesians 1:13-14)
ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son as God. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. The Christian seeks to live under His control daily. (2 Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13; John 14:16-17; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 2:12; 1 Corinthians 3:16; Galatians 5:25; Ephesians 5:1)
ABOUT THE BIBLE
The Bible is God’s word to all men. It was written by human authors under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is truth without any mixture of error. (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21; 2 Timothy 1:13; Psalm 119:105; Psalm 119:160; Psalm 12:6; Proverbs 30:5)
ABOUT THE CHURCH
A New Testament church of the Lord Jesus Christ is a local body of baptized believers who are associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel, observing the two ordinances of Christ, committed to His teachings, exercising the gifts, rights and privileges invested in them by His Word, and seeking to extend the gospel to the ends of the earth.

The church is an autonomous body with each member equally responsible. It operates under the Lordship of Christ following Scriptural teachings. It is led and overseen by the Senior Pastor and Staff, functioning together with each member as a unified body. (1 Corinthians 12:12-27; Matthew 16:18; 1 Peter 5:1-4)

The New Testament speaks also of the church body as the Bride of Christ which includes all of the redeemed of all the ages.

ABOUT BAPTISM AND THE LORD’S SUPPER
Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer’s faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Savior, the believer’s death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. It is a testimony to his faith in the final resurrection of the dead. (Romans 6:3-5; 1 Peter 3:21)

The Lord’s Supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby members of the church, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His second coming. (1 Corinthians 11:23-24)

ELECTION OF THE BELIEVER
The Bible states that all believers are the “Elect” of God. (Ephesians 1:4 God’s sovereignty) Believing that God’s word clearly states that God sent Jesus Christ to die for ALL people who would believe and accept Christ as their Savior. (John 3:16; Romans 10:3) Scripture teaches that through God’s sovereign will man has been given a choice to receive or reject God’s salvation. (John 3:18; Romans 10:13; 2 Peter 3:9; 1 Timothy 4:10; Acts 17:30; Romans 3:22-24; John 1:9)

Church History

Lindsay Lane Baptist Church was started in 1988 with 63 members, Phil Daws as Pastor and a vision for reaching people for Christ. The next few years brought many changes. Earl Trent served as interim pastor for a short time. Phillip Schrimsher served as pastor from September 1990 to October 1991. Brother Trent was called again to serve as interim pastor.

By early 1992 membership had declined to 32. On April 26, 1992 Dusty McLemore was called to serve as bi-vocational pastor and was officially ordained on May 3. Bradley Griggs came as bi-vocational Minister of Music in June 1992. Membership grew and the goal of 92 in ’92 was reached for Sunday School attendance. Because the church was growing, an education building with a fellowship hall was built in 1993. Jeff Bowman became the part-time Youth Minister to accommodate the growth of Students. In 1994 church membership increased to 200 and a full-time pastor was needed. God paved the way for Pastor Dusty to become full-time on September 9. The church went to a full worship service on Wednesday evenings and Equipping the Saints classes on Sunday evenings.

Church membership continued to increase so much that it became necessary to go to two Sunday morning worship services in 1995. On March 1, Sonny Schofield was called as part-time Minister of Education. A new sanctuary was built and dedicated on October 13, 1996 and the church worshiped in one Sunday morning service, but not for long. Approximately six months later, this ever growing church was back in two Sunday morning worship services.

In 1997 Dee Lauderdale was called as Associate Pastor. Growth required the addition of two buildings. The first was a 7400 sq-ft education building with ten classrooms for the nursery and preschool, staff offices and a larger choir room. The second was a 7700 sq-ft Family Life Center containing a basketball court, full kitchen and a room upstairs for the youth.

By 1999 the church had over 600 members. Rod Carroll was called as Youth Minister, part-time at first, but full-time by year’s end. Bro. Sonny became full-time Minister of Education & Outreach. The first steps toward opening a school were taken by initiating a Mom’s Morning Out Program with Dena Bowman as Director. By Fall the church had grown to over 800 members. This made it necessary to have two Sunday School times in addition to the two worship services. Bro. Dee left in December 2000 to start a new church plant.

In January 2001 Bro. Bob White was added to the staff as volunteer Minister to Senior Adults. In the fall Bro. Bradley became the full-time Minister of Administration & Music. Construction of a new sanctuary began under a “Challenge to Obey” capital campaign with the church depending fully on the Lord Jesus Christ to supply all that was needed. The Mission Statement was updated to “Growing Christ’s Church through preaching the Word, teaching the Way and reaching the World”. The church claimed Luke 14:27 as it’s official Scripture and “Bearing the Cross” Ministries was established.

At the beginning of 2002 our newsletter, These Exciting Times, began to be issued monthly. Bro. Randy Brown was called in June to the position of full-time Minister of Assimilation, Pastoral Care & Outreach. The following month, Bro. Bob became part-time Minister to Senior Adults. The new 1800-seat sanctuary was completed and the first service was held on December 1 with Dr. Johnny Hunt as our special guest speaker. Membership by year’s end had reached 1200!

In 2003 we began the renovation of the old sanctuary into a two-story educational facility and a choir suite. Mom’s Morning Out expanded to include a 4-year-old, five-day-a-week Kindergarten class. The Lindsay Lane Christian Academy was established as a home school umbrella program for church members and a Survey Team was formed to canvass the community and congregation on the feasibility of starting a Christian school. Lindsay Lane experienced its greatest year of numerical growth with 140 baptisms and 169 joined by letter or statement. Membership had risen to over 1400.

We shared our wonderful facilities by hosting several events in 2003: The Sanctity of Life Service with guest speaker David Ring in January; Metamorphosis Youth Crusade in February; New Song’s Easter Tour in April; Experiencing God the Musical in May; North Alabama Regional Sunday School Leader Conference in August; Global Focus in September; Rick Warren’s 40 Days of Purpose Campaign in October; Equipped to Endure Men’s Conference with Dr. Johnny Hunt in November and the musical How Do You Worship A King? was presented by the Celebration Choir in December.

The year 2004 was another exciting year of growth. The congregation had grown to over 1600 members. New Ministries developed such as the Angel Food Ministry; the Biker’s Ministry; Living Water Ministry and Managing God’s Money. Lindsay Lane expanded its borders in the Mission field by sending out three pastors to various churches in Tennessee: Brent & Kara Hawkins to Oak Grove; Jason & Michele Moore to New Grove; and Derrick & Elizabeth Moose to Cash Point. This was a year for international mission trips: Dinon, France; Barquismeto, Venezuela; and Johannesburg, South Africa. Bradley Griggs became Church Administrator while Rod Carroll and Eddie Lenz are serving as Interim Music Ministers. IV Marsh was added as interim Student Pastor.

2005 proved to be a growth year. The church selected Rod Carroll as Worship Leader, Eddie Lenz as Choir Director and IV Marsh as Student & Recreation Minister. The church adopted a Master Plan for future growth which included a New Preschool/Children facility to be erected in 2006. This first phase of the Master Plan would enable the church to pursue its Vision of a Christian Academy. It is evident that God’s hand is powerfully upon this great church. By year end, a “Make A Difference” Campaign to fund the new facility was under way. It is a “Winnable War”.

It was a year of changes in 2006. Bro. Bob White retired as the Pastor to Senior Adults and IV Marsh to become the youth pastor at newly formed Grace Point Baptist in North Las Vegas, NV. The grade structure was changed for the Students when we hired Matt Stockman as the Youth Minister to the 6-8th grades and John Holland stepped up as interim Youth Minister to the 9-12th grades. The search began for two Pastors: Worship and Students. Eric Pugh was welcomed as the new Associate Pastor to Missions, Senior Adults and Discipleship. We hosted our first Global Impact Celebration and four mission trips on foreign soil were made. Membership was reported to the Limestone Baptist Association as of August 31 of 1634 with 123 baptisms and 107 people joining by letter or statement. The “Make A Difference” Campaign is in place to fund the $5.6 million Preschool/Children’s Building.

At the beginning of 2007, Nathan Dewberry was called as Student Pastor and we broke ground on the Preschool/Children’s building. The quote “If you build it, they will come.” became an understatement. We had to move Adult Sunday School classes to the Family Life Center. On Sunday nights, there are not enough rooms for all the AWANA groups to meet in so they gathered in the hallways. We reached the $1 million mark in giving toward the “Make A Difference” Campaign. By year end, membership was at 1800. We changed our logo and mission statement to ““Making Disciples who Worship, Grow and Serve”.
The year 2008 looked to be an exciting year with 20 mission trips planned and the completion of a new Preschool/Children’s Building!

On September 7, 2008, we celebrated our 20th Anniversary with a good-old fashion Homecoming. God has tremendously blessed Lindsay Lane Baptist Church. As we depend on Him and act out of obedience, we will continue to grow in number and in Christ-like maturity. Only God knows how many more members we will have and how many more buildings we will build. There are no limits to what God will do and how He will bless when He is in control! (Jeremiah 33:3) 2008 was a time of much celebration for all God has done in and through Lindsay Lane Baptist Church. In August 2008, Lindsay Lane welcomed Dwaine Stroud and his family with his answer to the call of full time Minister of Music and Worship. Dwaine and his family were new to the Athens area, moving here from South Carolina.

On August 10, 2008 part of the Lindsay Lane vision became sight with the completion and opening of our Preschool/Children’s Building under the supervision of Executive Pastor, Bradley Griggs. Lindsay Lane celebrated its 20th Anniversary on September 7, 2008, looking back on what our awesome God has done in such a brief period of time!

With our children in their new beautiful space, the way was clear for the remodeling of the former children’s area to a new updated Student Worship Center and Sunday school rooms. This opened in February 2009.

With much prayer and the blessing of additional space, Lindsay Lane Christian Academy opened its doors for classes on August 10, 2009. Lori Edgemon was selected as the first principal of the academy with a total of 39 students and 4 full time teachers in kindergarten through sixth grades. In 2011 the church acquired the two campuses of Faith Christian Academy, a long established Christian school in the area. In a cooperative effort with FCA’s leadership team, LLCA expanded its educational services to include K3 through 12thgrade. In the 2011-2012 academic year, enrollment increased to over 300 students and the academy received full ACSI and SACS accreditations. LLCA celebrated with its first high school graduating class in May 2012 which included 12 seniors. Mr. Steve Murr now serves as Head of School and K-12 enrollment is approximately 600 students.

Following the departure of Nathan Dewberry, Andy John King came as Student Pastor in 2010. At the same time, the church expanded its ministerial staff by calling Alan Ostrzycki as Children’s Pastor.

In 2013, Lindsay Lane launched its first “church plant” expansion into the Harvest Community with the acquisition of the Christ Way Baptist Church facilities. Andy John King became the Campus Pastor at Lindsay Lane East. Alan Ostrzycki transitioned from Children’s Pastor into the role of Student Pastor.

Bro. Sonny Scofield retired at the end of 2018 after 23 years of service as the church’s Minister of Education. Then, in 2019, a second church plant, Lindsay Lane North, was launched in the Elkmont community with Alan Ostrzycki serving as the North Campus Pastor. Muscle Shoals native, Josh Shirley, returned to north Alabama from First Baptist Church Pasadena, TX to join the Main Campus staff as Student Pastor. Once the new North Campus was securely established and the new Student Pastor was in place, Senior Pastor Dusty McLemore shared with the church his plans to retire the following April. With the unanimous support of the entire senior pastoral staff, as well as the deacon body, Pastor Dusty recommended to the church that they consider calling Andy John King as its new lead pastor. Overwhelmingly the church voted to do so; and in January 2020 Pastor Andy John began the transition from his role as East Campus Pastor to that of Senior/Lead pastor. Pastor Dusty retired in April as planned and Pastor Andy John transition seamlessly into his new role as Lead Pastor.

2020 would indeed become a historically significant year for not only the church, but for the entire world. As a Covid-19 global pandemic shook the world, The Lord continued to grant His favor upon Lindsay Lane Baptist Church. Although the church was unable meet in person for approximately three months, Pastor Andy John led the staff to work diligently to ensure that the church continue to minister to the community and to the world. Weekly worship services were broadcast via livestream across numerous media platforms. Easter Sunday was hosted and celebrated on campus outside in the church’s parking lot via three “drive-in” worship services. Eventually, June ushered in a slow transition back to on campus worship in the sanctuary with appropriate social distancing measures in place. Through it all, The Lord remained faithful to His church. In such and unprecedented year, the church remained faithful to worship together, see numerous people come to know Christ and be baptized, and give record tithes and offerings toward the mission of sharing the gospel with others.

As 2020 closed, the church congratulated Eric Pugh upon his retirement. Pastor Eric served as Missions and Family Ministries Pastor for 14 years.

As 2021 began, one of the church’s missionary partners from Ecuador, Pastor Ignacio “Nacho” Ortiz answered the call to serve as interim Missions Pastor.

Today, Lindsay Lane Baptist Church remains committed to its mission and purpose of worshipping, growing, and serving “Together for the Glory of God and the Good of Man”.
